Save The Date – May 15, 2019 Does the VA Think Veterans’ Health Is Worth It? What: An invite-only veterans lunch briefing on the VA’s use of methods such as quality-adjusted-life-year (QALY) assessments to determine which health conditions are worth treating and which medications are “worth” being included in the VA’s formulary. When and Where: May 15, 2019 (11:45 AM – 1:30 PM) at Sheraton Grand Hotel – Bondi Room, Second Floor - 13th & J St., Sacramento, CA 95814. Lunch and valet parking provided. Why is this Important: In 2017, the VA announced a collaboration between the Institute for Clinical Economic Review (ICER) and the VA’s Pharmacy Benefits Office. The intent of the collaboration is for staff in the VA to integrate ICER reports into the VA formulary management process of evaluating the comparative clinical effectiveness and value of drugs. How this Impacts Veterans: Measuring the “cost effectiveness” or value of treatments is controversial as it values the lives of people with disabilities and serious chronic conditions as worth less than those of non-disabled people. Many veterans live with chronic conditions and disabilities. Who: Sara van Geertruyden, Executive Director, Partnership to Improve Patient Care (PIPC). PIPC is a national healthcare coalition focused on patient engagement in improving healthcare quality. RSVP to This email address is being protected from spambots.
